General description

2-Butanone (Methyl ethyl ketone, MEK), an aliphatic ketone, is considered as aprotic and protophilic solvent. The solvent composition plays an important role in the rate of liquid-phase catalytic hydrogenation of MEK to 2-butanol. The rate constant for the reaction of hydroxyl radicals with MEK has been determined and expressed in Arrhenius form as ΚC2H5COCH3+OH = 6.35*1013 exp(-2270/T) cm3mol-1s-1.

Application

2-Butanone may be used as an oxidizing agent for the conversion of primary alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes via Oppenauer oxidation in the presence of an iridium complex.

A new methodology is presented to measure water-air partition coefficients (Henry's constants) of volatiles, using APCI-MS. Significant advantages over other Henry's constant determination methods include the short measurement and sample preparation time and the possibility for simultaneous measurement of multiple
