General description
Membrane-filter rinse fluid is used to rinse the membrane filter to remove residues of liquid sample materials. It is recommended to use the rinse fluid if the sample contains higher hydrocarbons such as Vaseline, paraffin, etc., or fats. Balanced concentrations of nutrients in the fluid prevent the microorganisms retained by the filter from being exposed to physiological shock, thus enabling them to grow rapidly. The detergent polysorbate 80 ensures the emulsification of carbohydrates and fats without seriously affecting the microorganisms. If the sample contains large quantities of these compounds, additional polysorbate 80 (Tween® 80) (up to 9.0 g/liter) can be added per the USP recommendations before the broth is filtered.
Application
Membrane-filter rinse fluid is used as a rinsing fluid in the membrane filtration procedure.
