General description

Indium(III) chloride is a Lewis acid catalystused in a variety of organic reactions. It also finds application in the fields of catalysis, solar cells, and optoelectronics.

Application

Indium(III) chloride can be used:
  • As a catalyst for the preparation of 1,3-dithiolanes from aldehydes and ketones.
  • For acylation of phenols, thiols, alcohols, and amines.
  • As a precursor to fabricate Indium tin oxide(ITO) thin films for dye-sensitized solar cells.
  • To prepare solution-processed oxide semiconductor thin-film transistors (OS TFTs) that can be used in display devices.

The indium-bipyridine-catalyzed, enantioselective ring-opening of meso-epoxides with aliphatic and aromatic thiols furnished 1,2-mercapto alcohols in good yields and excellent enantioselectivities; the crystal structure of the chiral catalyst reveals a pentagonal-bipyramidal coordination geometry around the indium center.
