El timerosal es un reactivo oxidante de sulfhidrilo (tiol) capaz de inhibir una amplia variedad de enzimas dependientes del sulfhidrilo y proteínas como la metionina sintasa dependiente de PI3-cinasa, receptores de transporte de glutamato y las ATPasas dependientes de Na++K+.
