NBL1 (neuroblastoma 1, DAN family BMP antagonist) gene is localized to human chromosome 1p36.13. The protein encoded by this gene is 180 amino acid (aa) long and belongs to the CAN (Cerberus and DAN) family of proteins.

生化/生理作用
NBL1 (neuroblastoma 1, DAN family BMP antagonist) gene encodes a transcription factor that negatively regulates the cell cycle. It is found to be down-regulated in human colon cancer and may play a role in cancer development and progression. NBL1 is a secreted protein that serves as an antagonist against bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs). It blocks the interaction of BMPs with their receptors. It is capable of stimulating differentiation of neuroblastoma cells in the presence of retinoic acid in vitro. It is also involved in osteoblast differentiation. This gene is observed to be over-expressed in pancreatic cancer and may serve as a potential marker for the diagnosis of pancreatic carcinoma.
