General description

A certified solution standard for use in LC/MS or GC/MS benzodiazepine testing methods in clinical toxicology, urine drug testing, or forensic analysis. Etizolam, sold under brand names such as Etilaam, Etizola, or Depas, is a benzodiazepine analog used for the short-term treatment of insomnia, anxiety, or panic attacks. Etizolam is also sold on the designer drug market with cases of abuse noted in Europe and the US.

Application

  • A strategy for the detection of benzodiazepine drugs using low-resolution paper-spray mass spectrometry for harm reduction drug checking: This study explores the application of Etizolam in the development of low-cost, rapid mass spectrometric techniques for detecting benzodiazepines at harm reduction sites, emphasizing its utility in public health interventions (Miskulin et al., 2023).
  • Unexpected results found in larvae samples from two postmortem forensic cases: Incorporates Etizolam to elucidate drug metabolism in forensic toxicology, highlighting its relevance in the postmortem analysis and its impact on forensic investigations (Groth et al., 2022).
  • Rapid and accurate etizolam detection using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for community drug checking: Demonstrates the use of Etizolam as a standard in developing cutting-edge, reliable spectroscopic methods for quick drug testing in community settings, thus advancing forensic and clinical toxicology (Gozdzialski et al., 2022).
  • Incorporation of five common hypnotics into hair after a single dose and application to a forensic case of drug facilitated crimes: This research utilizes Etizolam in studies focused on drug deposition in hair, providing crucial insights for the forensic analysis of drug-facilitated crimes (Sasaki et al., 2021).

Biochem/physiol Actions

Etizolam is a thienodiazepine anxiolytic and as compared to other benzodiazepines has lower dependence potential. It differs from other benzodiazepines in that its molecules possess a thiophene ring instead of benzene. It has anticonvulsant, sedative, anxiolytic, amnesic, hypnotic and muscle relaxant properties. It′s mode of action is through benzodiazepine receptor. It is used to treat insomnia, moderate depression and social anxiety disorder, and has occasionally been associated with blepharospasm and skin lesions.

Etizolam is an anxiolytic drug with a pharmacologic profile similar to that of the classic benzodiazepines. Neurochemical research suggests that etizolam may have selectivity for the subpopulation of Y-aminobutyric acid type A receptors associated with anxiety (ie, alpha1, beta2, gamma2).
