Description

General description

Petroleum ether, a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons, is majorly used as a laboratory solvent. It mainly contains pentane and hexane.[1][2] Petroleum ether has properties similar to ether and is used in cosmetics, detergents, paint, and varnish, etc.[3][4]

Application

Petroleum ether can be used:     

• As a solvent in API production.[5]       
• As a chromatography solvent for product extraction, and purification of non-polar compounds.[6]       
• In the extraction of oil, wax and fat.[7]
