Description

General description

Bilirubin is an orange-yellow bile pigment[1] and one of the major end products of hemoglobin decomposition.[2] It contains conjugated double bonds and reactive hydrogen atoms. In adults, the upper limit of the normal range of bilirubin is >1mg/dL.[3] Serum levels of bilirubin in healthy newborns are less than 15 mg/dl.[4] This product corresponds to the unconjugated form.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Bilirubin is reported to cross the blood-brain barrier and exert significant antioxidant effects in the brain. This pigment aids in coloration in the various forms of jaundice.[1] Bilirubin levels act as biomarkers in liver and blood disorders.[5] Unconjugated form of bilirubin at lower levels serves as a physiological antioxidant.[2][5] However, increased concentration of bilirubin is toxic and leads to neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in neonates.[5]
