General description

Croton oil is a toxic viscous liquid extracted from seeds of Croton tiglium. It is pale yellow to brown in color and is transparent in nature.[1] Croton oil has a strong irritant property[1] and is used along with phenol in some chemical peels.[2] It also has a tumor promoting ability.[3]
Croton oil is extracted from Croton tiglium L. It consists of crotonoleic acid, crotonic acid, crotonyl alcohol, crotonyl alcohol bisester and crotonyl alcohol trisester. Croton oil acts as a stimulant in the skin and mucosal inflammation. It is associated with allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and skin carcinoma.[4] Croton oil functions as a skin peeling agent.[5]

Application

Croton oil has been used to induce acute skin inflammation.[6]
Croton oil has been used to induce inflammation in mouse ears.[7][6][8]

Other Notes

Essential oil rich in glycerides of saturated fatty acids, and in phorbol esters.
