General description

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is a glycoprotein that belongs to the class of oxidoreductase of the peroxidases family. It is found in horseradish roots. HRP contains significant amounts of carbohydrates and photohemin IX as its prosthetic group.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Peroxidases catalyze the cleavage of peroxides by redox reactions. The active center includes heme, cysteine thiols, selenium, manganese, and other chemical moieties. Peroxidase isoenzymes are essential for oxidizing reactive oxygen species, innate immunity, hormone biosynthesis, and the pathogenesis of many diseases. They are generally used for sensors, drug delivery devices, environment protection, bioremediation, and energy production. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is the widely used oxidoreductase in colorimetric, fluorimetric, chemiluminescent, electrochemical, and immunoassays. Its concentration can be measured with O-phenylenediamine (OPD) and hydrogen peroxide. HRP serves as a tracer for immunocytochemistry and is widely used in antibody-enzyme conjugates.

Features and Benefits

  • Ideal for preparing small-sized antibody-enzyme conjugates
  • Enables better cellular penetration through low-molecular-weight conjugates
  • Small conjugate size ensures greater accessibility to antigenic structures within tissue sections
  • Stable even under the conditions employed for crosslinking
