在真核生物的三羧酸循环和其他微生物的乙醛酸循环中,草酸盐或草酸是一种代谢分解产物。草酸盐或草酸常见于人和其他哺乳动物的尿液中。草酸浓度可用于检测肾功能,高水平草酸指示存在主要由不溶性草酸钙盐形成的肾结石。作为肾结石的标记物,检测草酸钙比检测钙浓度更准确,因为即使是在正常尿液中,钙的分泌浓度页较高。
