General description

18:1 Lyso phosphoglycerol is a lyso-phospholipid detergent. Lyso-phospholipids are produced in γ-proteobacteria by lipoprotein acyltransferase activity. These lipids are found in minimal amount in normal bacterial membranes.

Application

18:1 Lyso PG has been used as a lipid standard in the optimization of the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method conditions.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Lyso phosphoglycerol (Lyso PG) and acyl-CoA acts as a substrate for lysophosphatidylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (LPGAT1) to synthesize phosphoglycerol. Lyso-phospholipids are nonbilayer-forming lipids. Accumulation of lysophospholipids in bacterial membranes disrupt the membrane integrity due to its detergent- like physical property.

Cell membranes contain several classes of glycerophospholipids, which have numerous structural and functional roles in the cells. Polyunsaturated fatty acids, including arachidonic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, are located at the sn-2 (but not sn-1)-position of glycerophospholipids in an asymmetrical manner.
