General description

Sodium Hydroxide, also known as caustic soda or lye, is a white crystalline odorless solid which is corrosive and absorbs moisture from the air. When dissolved in water, Sodium Hydroxide generates heat to ignite combustible materials. In the form of pellets, Sodium Hydroxide, when dissolved, forms a colorless liquid, denser than water.

Application

Sodium Hydroxide is generally used in the solid or 50% solution form. It is suitable for use at various stages of soaps, paper, rayon, and petroleum product manufacturing. It is also used in carbohydrate research using FTIR analysis. Sodium Hydroxide is used as a pre-treatment reagent to study enzymatic hydrolysis.
