The gene CALC1 (calcitonin 1) is mapped to human chromosome 11. CALC1 encodes for preprocalcitonin. Preprocalcitonin is cleaved by endopeptidase at the amino-terminal to produce procalcitonin.[1] Procalcitonin works as a peptide hormone and is mainly produced by the C cells of the thyroid and certain endocrine cells of the lung.[2][3] Under normal expression conditions, procalcitonin is immediately cleaved into three specific fragments, an N terminal residue, calcitonin and katacalcin.[4] Recombinant human procalcitonin produced in Escherichia coli is a single, non-glycosylated, polypeptide chain containing 116 amino acids with a molecular weight of 12,796 Daltons.

Procalcitonin is a prohormone of calcitonin.[2] Levels of unprocessed procalcitonin rise significantly after bacterial infection, trauma or shock.[6] Procalcitonin is also associated with systemic complications in humans suffering from acute pancreatitis.[7]
