General description

Benzyl Alcohol is a type of aromatic alcohol mainly used in cosmetic products and preservatives. It is also used as a solvent and viscosity-decreasing agent.[1]

Application

Benzyl alcohol has been used as a reference standard for the analysis of the analyte in scented consumer goods by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) as well as gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O).[2] It has been also used as a reference standard for the determination of the analyte in “suspected” skin allergen mixture[3] and in fragrance allergens[4] by GC-MS. It may be used as a reference standard for the identification of the analyte in bio-oils[5] obtained from pyrolysis of various feedstock and in Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze black tea[6] by GC-MS.
