アデノシン受容体に作用する内因性神経伝達物質です。心臓保護作用はA₁アデノシン受容体の活性化に関連するものと考えられます。アデノシンの抗血小板作用および抗炎症作用は、A₂アデノシン受容体を介して起こると思われます。対照的に、アデノシンは、喘息や慢性閉塞性肺疾患(COPD)の炎症誘発性メディエ-タとも考えられています。
