General description

Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) is the second most abundant protein available in the central nervous system (CNS) myelin. It belongs to the intrinsically disordered or conformationally adaptable protein family.

Application

Myelin Basic Protein Guinea Pig Fragment 68-82 has been used for lymphocyte activation in human blood samples. It has also been used as a component of the incomplete Freund′s adjuvant for the induction of autoimmune encephalomyelitis in rats.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) is known as an executive molecule of myelin as it is a structural protein that is required for the formation of central nervous system (CNS) myelin. It participates in the adhesion of the cytosolic surfaces of the multi-layered compact myelin. MBP binds with several polyanionic proteins such as tubulin, actin, clathrin, and Ca2+-calmodulin. It binds to several negatively charged lipids on the cytosolic surface of oligodendrocyte membranes and plays a role in the adhesion of these surfaces in the multilayered myelin sheath.
Myelin basic protein fragment that induces experimental allergic encephalomyelitis.
