MGAT4A (mannosyl (α-1,3-)-glycoprotein β-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase, isozyme A) gene is mapped to human chromosome 2q12. The enzyme contains 535-aminoacids and is encoded by an mRNA having 16 exons interspaced by 15 introns. It is predominantly expressed in spleen, thymus, peripheral blood leukocytes, lymph node, prostate, pancreas, and small intestine.

生化/生理作用

MGAT4A (mannosyl (α-1,3-)-glycoprotein β-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase, isozyme A) gene encodes a glycosyltransferase that mediates the formation of tri- and multiantennary branching structures on membrane proteins in the Golgi apparatus. The enzyme catalyzes the transfer of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) from UDP-GlcNAc in a β-1,4 linkage to the core mannose residues of N-linked glycans. It mediates GLUT2 glycosylation and facilitates the transport of glucose by pancreatic β cells. Increased levels of this protein is observed in white cells of peripheral blood of Type 2 diabetes patients. The enzyme is involved in the regulation of the availability of serum glycoproteins, oncogenesis, and cell differentiation.
