General description

Sorbitan sesquioleate (SSO) is a sorbitol derivative emulsifier. It is a common emulsifier component in topical corticosteroids, topical antibiotics, topical antifungals, moisturizing creams and lotions and topical retinoids.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sorbitan sesquioleate is useful as a stabilizing agent in polymerization process to produce spherical acrylamide beads. It has been used in many topical agents. SSO have recently been implicated in allergic dermatitis.

Other Notes

Fatty acid composition: Oleic acid (C18:1) approx. 70%; balance primarily palmitic acid (C16:0), stearic acid (C18:0) and linoleic acid (C18:2).
