General description

Levamisole, an antihelminthic drug used to treat worm infestations in humans and animals, is an adulterant and cutting agent found in cocaine sold in the US and Canada. From 2008-2009, levamisole was detected in 69% of cocaine samples seized by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Application

  • Immunomodulatory research: The study explored the potential immunomodulatory effects of levamisole hydrochloride in humans and farm animals, highlighting its utility in enhancing immune responses and its therapeutic potential across a range of conditions (Gholami et al., 2023).

  • Anthelmintic research: A study developed a real-time detection method for the levamisole resistance variant in Haemonchus contortus, illustrating the role of levamisole hydrochloride in understanding and managing anthelmintic resistance (Antonopoulos et al., 2024).

Cocaine use is associated with several rheumatic syndromes. This review summarizes these clinical manifestations and highlights recent developments linked to levamisole-adulterated cocaine. Cocaine use has been linked to several distinctive syndromes that can be difficult to distinguish from idiopathic rheumatic
