Description générale

Cyclin-dependent kinase-like 5 (EC 2.7.11.22; UniProt O76039; also known as Serine/threonine-protein kinase 9) is encoded by the CDKL5 (also known as EIEE2, STK9) gene (Gene ID 6792) in human. CDKL5/STK9 is a serine/threonine protein kinase widely distributed in all tissues, with highest levels in thymus, testes, and brain, where it is found localized in the nucleus and dendrite of neurons. CDKL5/STK9 expression is found peaked in the early postnatal period and Cdkl5-knockdown in mice leads to autistic-like behavior, dendritic hypotrophy and impairment of neural circuit communication. Likewise, human CDKL5 gene mutations are linked to X-linked neurological developmental disorders involving severe mental retardation and seizures appearing in the first postnatal months. Point mutations in CDKL5 have also been reported in patients with atypical variants of Rett syndrome (RTT), infantile spasms and severe neurodevelopmental retardation.

Renal tubular epithelial cells (RTECs) perform the essential function of maintaining the constancy of body fluid composition and volume. Toxic, inflammatory, or hypoxic-insults to RTECs can cause systemic fluid imbalance, electrolyte abnormalities and metabolic waste accumulation- manifesting as acute kidney
