Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a peptide hormone is liberated from endocrine epithelial cells of the small intestine. The proglucagon gene (GCG) codes for glucagon, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2).

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) treatment helps to lower the risk of stroke in diabetic patients and to be neuroprotective in experimental stroke models.
