General description

Phleomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic and is a member of the bleomycin family.[1]

Application

Phleomycin from Streptomyces verticillus has been used as an antibiotic in the screening of transformants of Trypanosoma brucei[2]. It has also been used as an antibiotic in the maintenance of Escherichia coli.[3]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phleomycin can bind and intercalate with the DNA that leads to DNA strand breaks. It acts as an inhibitor of DNA replication.[1]
