Metabolite of the pentose phosphate pathway. Inhibits the T. brueci and sheep 6-phospho-gluconate dehydrogenase-catalysed NADP+-dependent oxidative decarboxylation of 6-phospho-D-gluconate (6PG) to D-ribulose 5-phosphate (Ru5P), inhibits the key glycolytic enzyme phospho-glucose isomerase. Metabolism of galactose-6-phosphate in rat heart and brain.
