General description

Neutral Red is a cationic dye that is used for nuclear counterstaining in biological research. It also serves as a pH indicator in analytical laboratories. On decomposition, neutral red dye releases carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen oxides, and hydrogen chlorides. Therefore, this dye is considered toxic and is recommended to remove before discharge into receiving streams.

Application

Neutral Red Solution (0.33%) has been to stain viable cells and measure cell viability. It has also been used as a component of culture medium for enzymatic digestion of ovarian medulla tissue to extract follicles.
