General description

α-Carotene is a tetraterpenoid pigment that belongs to the group of carotenoids. Along with β-carotene, it is regarded as a precursor to vitamin A and is responsible for the orange-red color of fruits and vegetables. It is also known to show anti-oxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties.

Application

The analytical standards can also be used as follows:
  • Simultaneous quantification of five carotenoids and two chlorophylls from soybean flour samples by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) method combined with UV-Vis detector
  • Profiling of carotenoids and their isomers in different plant tissue samples by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a C30 column and photodiode array (PDA) detection
  • Development and validation of a high-performance liquid chromatography-UV/Vis detection method for the determination of four carotenoids— α-carotene, β-carotene, α-cryptoxanthin, and β-cryptoxanthin, in oil obtained from P. conoideus
  • Multi-residue determination of carotenoids in two algal species, isolated from saline water by HPLC coupled with a photodiode array detector
  • Ultra-high performance supercritical fluid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPSFC-MS) method-based quantitative analysis of carotenoids in microalgae and rosehip extract samples

Vitamins and carotenoids are organic compounds that are important for vital functions of the human organism. Since the human body is not able to synthesize most of these micronutrients, they need to be supplied by the intake of food or

Although beta-carotene has been considered to be a key cancer preventive agent in green and yellow vegetables, other types of carotenoids, such as alpha-carotene, may also contribute to anticarcinogenic action, since these carotenoids usually coexist with beta-carotene and are detectable

Thirty-four samples of human milk (HM) collected from mothers in Korea were classified into three groups according to their fat content. The lutein + zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin, β-carotene, lycopene, α-carotene, and fatty acids (FAs) present in the HM were quantitatively analyzed.

Studies of adult subjects have found a strong correlation between serum carotenoids and skin carotenoids measured by resonance Raman spectroscopy (RRS). No published studies have examined correlations between skin and serum carotenoids among children. We aimed to validate skin RRS
