General description

Phenol is an aromatic alcohol. Various industrial processes for the synthesis of phenol have been proposed.
Phenol is an aromatic alcohol. Various industrial processes for the synthesis of phenol have been proposed. It can undergo oxidation in the presence of Fentons′ reagent in aqueous solution.

Application

Phenol may be employed for the isolation of deoxyribonucleic acid from Bacillus subtilis. It may be used in the Berthelot color reaction for the quantitative estimation of ammonia.
Phenol may be used in the following processes:
  • As a phase-transfer catalyst in electrolyte solutions of lithium-O2 battery to promote solution phase discharge.
  • Preparation of phenol-sulfuric acid reagent for colorimetric determination of total sugar content.
