General description

The oxygen-removing catalysts can reduce oxygen to less than 2 ppb when the level in the incoming gas does not exceed 10 ppm. Because the catalyst is coated on a Molecular Sieve, this trap also can remove water vapor.

Dimensions:
  • 120 cc Trap: 111/8in. (28.2 cm) long x 13/8 in. (35 mm) diameter
  • 750 cc Trap: 161/2 in. (41.9 cm) long x 25/16in. (59 mm) diameter
  • S-Trap: 71/2 in. (19 cm) long x 59/16 in. (14.1 cm) wide x 1/2 in. (13 mm) diameter [total bed length = 193/4 in. (50.2 cm); the extended bed length ensures prolonged contact between the gas and the adsorbent and provides greater working capacity]

Application

Two cascade columns of Molecular Sieve 5A Moisture Trap and Supelpure-O Oxygen/Moisture Trap was used to purify ethylene.[1]

Questions

1–3 of 3 Questions
  1. Is the S-Trap included with purchase of either the 750cc or 120cc trap? What style of fitting do the traps have?

    1 answer
    1. The S-Traps are not included with any of the Oxygen/Moisture traps and have been discontinued. These traps have a 1/8 inch Swagelok fitting.

  2. What is the expected lifetime of this mositure trap?

    1 answer
    1. Product No. 22449 has a stated life of 6.5 gas cylinders. This stated life is based on 9 in. x 51 in. cylinders (218 cubic feet) of carrier gas containing 50 ppm of contaminants supplying one chromatograph with two capillary columns. To correct for other volumes of gas per cylinder, multiply this stated life (cylinders) by the number of cubic feet in the cylinders, then divide by 218.

  3. Regarding the Supelpure™-O Oxygen/Moisture Trap 120 cc, what flow rate is suitable for this device? And is removal efficiency dependent on temperature? At last, could I use this device to remove ppm level oxygen contaminations in pure CO2 as well?

    1 answer
    1. Please see below for responses to each question submitted.

      1. What flow rate is suitable for this device?
The maximum flow rate for the Supelpure™-O Oxygen/Moisture Trap - 22449 is 250 ml/minute. The pressure setting on the incoming carrier gas tank depends on what type of analysis is being done (packed or capillary, isothermal or temperature programmed method, etc.) The typical recommendation for GC applications is that the pressure be at least 20 psi higher than that achieved during the analysis - preferably 40-50 psi higher.

      2. Is removal efficiency dependent upon temperature?
Unless the GC maintains constant pressure, as the temperature goes up, resistance/increased back pressure causes the flow rate to drop.

      3. Is this device able to remove ppm level oxygen contaminations in pure CO2
The capacity for these traps will not vary considerably with changes in the inlet concentration of O2. At high levels of O2, the efficiency may be impacted. Oxygen is reduced to less than 0.5 ppm when the level of the incoming gas does not exceed 10 ppm. Since this trap can only remove oxygen and moisture, it can be used to remove oxygen from the CO2 gas stream as well.
