Allgemeine Beschreibung

Agar, also known as agar-agar, is one of the biochemical agents most used in microbiology field. It is obtained from red algae Rhodophyceae, is the most abundantly used gelling agent in culture media. Agar is polysaccharide complex, composed of 70% agarose and 30% agaropectin.

Anwendung

Agar has been used:
  • to culture Staphylococcus aureus for phage infection studies[1]
  • as a supplement with NZCYM media for culturing Campylobacter coli strains for lysogeny screening[2]
  • as a basic media component to improve in vitro ovule and embryo culture methods of cross Chitalpa hybrids to facilitate the rescue of triploids[3]
  • in the culture media for Bdellovibrio spp. and Micavibrio spp. strains to check their susceptibility towards a variety of select agents[4]

Sonstige Hinweise

A purified agar from which the naturally occurring pigments, salts and miscellaneous matter has been reduced to a minimum.

Poultry meat is considered a major source of Campylobacter. This micro-aerobic bacterium is commonly responsible for foodborne illness. This work focuses on the isolation of Campylobacter coli lytic bacteriophages (phages) against target C. coli strains. A method involving the enrichment

The growing concern about multi-drug resistant pathogenic bacteria has led to a renewed interest in the study of bacteriophages as antimicrobials and as therapeutic agents against infectious diseases (phage therapy). Phages to be used for this purpose have to be

Arylamine N-acetyltransferase-1 (NAT1) is an enzyme that catalyzes the biotransformation of arylamine and hydrazine substrates. It also has a role in the catabolism of the folate metabolite p-aminobenzoyl glutamate. Recent bioinformatics studies have correlated NAT1 expression with various cancer subtypes.
