Serumalbumin kann auch als Fraktion V bezeichnet werden. Diese Bezeichnungskonvention stammt aus der ursprünglichen Cohn-Methode zur Fraktionierung von Serumproteinen mittels kalter Ethanolfällung. Andere verwenden diese Bezeichnung für Serumalbumin, das durch Ethanolfraktionierungsmethoden gewonnen wurde, die stark modifiziert wurden, seit die ursprüngliche Cohn-Methode beschrieben wurde. Sigma-Aldrich produziert und vertreibt Serumalbumine, die unter Anwendung verschiedener Primärmethoden, einschließlich der ursprünglichen Cohn-Fraktionierungsmethode, modifizierter Ethanolfraktionierungsmethoden, Hitzeschockfraktionierung und Chromatographie aufgereinigt wurden.
