Gene Information

Application

  • In yeast cells, doxycycline has been used in doxycycline-inducible system for overexpression of methyltransferase Hmt1 (hnRNP methyltransferase 1).
  • It has been used in the doxycycline-inducible IFITM (interferon-induced transmembrane) cell lines.
  • It has also been used as an antimicrobial agent.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Doxycycline is a semisynthetic tetracycline that is active against bacteria, mycoplasma and protozoan parasites. It inhibits the bacterial protein synthesis by inhibiting the interaction of aminoacyl-tRNA and the bacterial ribosome.[1]

Other Notes

Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place.

Questions

1–2 of 2 Questions
  1. What is the solubility ratio of doxycycline monohydrate D1822, and in what solvent should it be resuspended?

    1 answer
    1. The solubility is not determined for D1822 doxycycline monohydrate. An older lot 066M4022V did have a solubility specification for DMSO of 0.90 - 1.10 mg/ml. General information for the solubility of this material can be found online: Soluble in ethanol or methanol; Sparingly soluble in water; Soluble in dilute acids, alkali hydroxides, and dimethyl sulfoxide. The following article has information on the solubility of doxycycline in aqueous solution: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022354915424694

      Helpful?

  2. Is Doxycycline monohydrate suitable for cell culture?

    1 answer
    1. This product has not been tested specifically for cell culture applications and has not been tested for endotoxin. However, a review of the peer-reviewed papers indicates that this material has been used successfully in cell culture studies. Please see the link below to review the peer-reviewed articles:
