General description

Basic fuchsin, a triphenylmethane dye is commonly a mixture of pararosaniline (C.I. 42500), rosaniline (C.I. 42510), magenta II and new fuchsine (CI 42520). Basic fuchsin is widely used in tissue-specific staining of biological and coloring several materials including orlon, cotton, leather, paper etc. It is also used to stain collagen, muscle and mitochondria.

Application

Basic Fuchsin has been used in several biological tests including:
  • Acid-fast staining with carbol-fuchsine
  • Periodic Acid-Schiff method
  • Feulgen technique for DNA staining
  • ENDO culture medium for distinguishing between the bacteria Escherichia coli and Aerobacter aerogenes
  • Leifson′s method for bacterial flagella staining.
Certified for use in Leifson′s flagella stain.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Basic fuchsin possesses anesthetic, bactericidal (gram-positive), and fungicidal properties.
