Descripción

General description

The gene KLHL5 (kelch like family member 5) encodes a member of the kelch-repeat protein family. They have tandemly arranged motifs of around 50 amino acids. The encoded protein contains two conserved domains, the BTB domain and the kelch repeat domain. Its expression is strongest in ovary, adrenal gland, and thyroid and to a lesser extent in trachea, prostate, testis, lymph node, and spinal cord. The gene is mapped to human chromosome 4p13–4p15.1.

Application

Biochem/physiol Actions

The protein kelch like family member 5 functions as an actin-binding protein and may regulate the assembly and disassembly of actin filaments. The family of kelch-repeat proteins is involved in several cellular processes, such as actin cytoskeleton interaction, cytoplasmic sequestration of transcription factors and cell morphology.
