General description

Cobalt(II) fluoride tetrahydrate is a reddish crystalline solid with slight solubility in water. It serves as a source of cobalt for oxygen-sensitive applications. Additionally, it is employed as a catalyst biaryl cross-coupling reactions.

Application

Cobalt(II) fluoride tetrahydrate is used as a starting material to synthesize 2-dimensional cobalt-fluoride-oxide as an oxygen evolution electrocatalysts using a rapid thermal annealing (RTA) method. In this process, the cobalt(II) fluoride tetrahydrate is placed in an alumina furnace at 400°C. After annealing for 20 minutes in air, the alumina crucible is removed and allowed to cool naturally to room temperature. The resulting products are then rinsed multiple times in deionized water and ethanol to remove any soluble impurities. Finally, the product is dried thoroughly in a vacuum oven at 60°C to obtain the 2D nanosheets sample. Furthermore, when combined with N-Heterocyclic Carbenes, Cobalt(II) fluoride tetrahydrate has been found to be highly effective as a catalyst for cross-coupling reactions between aryl Grignard reagents and aryl as well as heteroaryl halides. This reaction results in the formation of unsymmetrical biaryls.
