General description

Questions

1–9 of 9 Questions
  1. How do I dissolve anhydrous magnesium chloride in DI water without forming specks

    1 answer
    1. This material is appreciably soluble in water. The appearance of particulates typically does not effect the performance of the product and solutions may be filtered to remove precipitates. However, the dropwise addition of 0.1 – 1.0 M HCl, while stirring the solution, may help in redissolving particulates. Alternatively, the hexahydrate form is less likely to form particulates in solution and may be of interest. Please see the link below to review these product options:

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. What is the cause of the gray/black specks and gray color when dissolved in pure water? Solutions become clear after filtering.

    1 answer
    1. This anhydrous Magnesium chloride reacts with water to make Magnesium hydroxide and/or Magnesium oxide, which are grey or black in color. The precipitate can likely be dissolved by adding a few drops of hydrochloric acid. Or, as was noted in the question, the precipitate can be removed by filtration. For making aqueous solutions of Magnesium chloride, the use of Magnesium chloride hexahydrate is generally recommended.

  4. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  5. How do I store MgCl2 solution, once it's dissolved in water?

    1 answer
    1. When filter sterilized, this product may be stored at room temperature for up to 2 years, provided no contaminants are introduced. Please see the link below to review the product datasheet for item M1028, a prepared 1M solution:
      https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/product/documents/206/954/m1028pis.pdf

      Helpful?

  6. Would it be suitable for biochemical applications, such as preparing a buffer solution for bacterial treatment? Or would it be preferable to order a ready-to-use 1M solution (ex. M1028)?

    1 answer
    1. Product M8266 can be used in buffer preparation. The salt can be selected if you require a solution at a specific concentration that is not commercially available. This would require you to also have access to a suitable water source. If you decide to choose a solution this would reduce your preparation time. It is necessary to determine if a specific volume and concentration is required for the intended application.

  7. What is Product M8266, Magnesium chloride, soluble in?

    1 answer
    1. Per the chemicals encyclopedia published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, 13th Edition, this product is soluble in water (100 mg/ml), yielding a hazy, colorless solution.  Please also note that this could be a very exothermic reaction.
