Descrizione generale

Hexafluoroisopropyl methyl ether (HFPM) is a fluorinated ether, also called isoflurothyl in biomedical applications as a general anesthetic. HFPM is a colorless, non-flammable liquid used in the battery industry as a high-performing cosolvent and additive for electrolyte formulations in lithium-ion batteries. HFPM has a low viscosity and a low boiling point and is miscible with many polar organic solvents, which lend it use as a diluent for low-temperature applications. Our battery-grade HFPM is an important component in the production of safe and efficient lithium-ion batteries for use in a wide range of applications.

Applicazioni

Battery-grade hexafluoroisopropyl methyl ether (HFPM) is a versatile and highly effective cosolvent and electrolyte additive for use in lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). With its low viscosity, low boiling point, and compatibility with a variety of battery solvents, HFPM is an ideal diluent for low-temperature applications and can help to improve the wettability of polypropylene separators. Additionally, HFPM′s nonflammability is a major benefit for battery safety. HFPM also has good compatibility with most electrode materials including for example, lithium metal, graphite, NMCs, and LMO. Studies have shown that in SIBs adding HFPM as an electrolyte additive can help to stabilize the Na electrode surface and form a new fluorine-containing organic layer, resulting in a more stable solid electrolyte interphase. Overall, battery-grade HFPM is a crucial component in the production of high-performing, reliable, and safe lithium-ion batteries for a wide range of applications, from consumer electronics to electric vehicles.

Sodium-metal batteries with conventional organic liquid electrolytes have disadvantages including dendrite deposition and safety concern. In this work, we report a low-flammable electrolyte (NaPF6-FRE) consisting of 1 M NaPF6 in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropylmethyl ether (HFPM) (2:1:2
