Safrol ist eine natürlich vorkommende, genotoxische Verbindung, die in Sassafraswurzel und Betel (Areca)-Pfriem gefunden wird. Es ist ein Hepatocarcinogen und Safrol-DNA-Addukte wurden auch beim Mundkrebs von Betelnuss Konsumenten beobachtet. Die Metaboliten von Safrol bilden Addukte mit der DNA und lösen chromasomale Aberrationen und Schwesterchromatidaustausch aus.
