Description

General description

Vancomycin supplement is a microbiology-grade antibiotic supplement used torender culture media selective for certain Gram‑negative bacteria. It consists of vancomycin hydrochloride, a glycopeptideantibiotic with strong activity against Gram‑positive organisms but little activity against Gram‑negative bacteria. The supplement is intended to be added to appropriatebase media to inhibit accompanying Gram‑positive flora and thereby improve recovery and selective enrichment oftarget Gram‑negative species such asEnterobacter sakazakii (now Cronobacter spp.). ISO methodsrecommend this supplement for the selective enrichment of Enterobactersakazakii in food and environmental samples.

Application

Vancomycin supplement is primarily used as an antibiotic additive forselective enrichment media, especially in methods aligned with ISOrecommendations to detect Enterobacter sakazakii/Cronobacterspp. in powdered infant formula and related products. It has also been employedin selective media to investigate vancomycin‑resistant enterococci (VRE) in treated wastewater and other environmentalsamples, where defined concentrations of vancomycin are used to select forresistant populations while suppressing susceptible Gram‑positive bacteria
