Description générale

Bentonite is comprised primarily of the smectite group (montmorillonite) of clay minerals. It is widely used in various industrial applications such as clarification of edible and mineral oils, paints, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. It is also used as an adsorbent for the elimination of pollutants from wastewater.[1]
The swelling property of bentonite is used to produce viscous water suspensions for bonding, plasticizing, and suspending applications. The presence of a large surface area of bentonite is due to the colloidal dispersion of the particles is the main reason for its application as an insecticide carrier, an emulsifier, and an emulsion stabilizer.[2]

Application

  • Optimization of Cd (II) removal from aqueous solution by natural hydroxyapatite/bentonite composite using response surface methodology.: This study explores the use of a hydroxyapatite/bentonite composite for the efficient removal of cadmium ions from aqueous solutions, highlighting its potential application in environmental remediation (Desalegn et al., 2023).

  • Acid-activated Sodium Bentonite and Kaolin Clay: Comparative Study by Physicochemical Properties.: This research compares the physicochemical properties of acid-activated sodium bentonite and kaolin clay, focusing on their potential applications in various industrial processes and environmental treatments (Kumar & Lingfa, 2020).

  • Photochemical synthesis of silver nanoparticles on chitosans/montmorillonite nanocomposite films and antibacterial activity.: The research focuses on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles on chitosan/montmorillonite nanocomposite films and their enhanced antibacterial activity, suggesting potential applications in medical and environmental fields (Gabriel et al., 2017).

The single-solute and bisolute sorption behaviour of phenol and trichloroethylene, two organic compounds with different structures, onto cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-montmorillonite was studied. The monolayer Langmuir model (MLM) and empirical Freundlich model (EFM) were applied to the single-solute sorption of phenol

Questions

1–5 of 5 Questions
  1. What grade is this item?

    1 answer
    1. This product is considered a research grade with an assigned quality level of 100. Please see the link below to review additional information regarding product quality levels:

  2. What is the cation exchange capacity (CEC) for this bentonite product?

    1 answer
    1. This product has a reference value for cation exchange capacity (CEC) of 90 to 120 meq per gram. Unfortunately, there is no test on the cation exchange capacity on a lot-to-lot basis, so performance cannot be guaranteed for every lot.

      Helpful?

  3. What type of bentonite is it? Calcium bentonite or sodium bentonite or other?

    1 answer
    1. This product is not in the calcium or sodium form. The assigned CAS number for this material is 1302-78-9, which is simply Bentonite or Montmorillonite. The CAS number for calcium bentonite is 1318-93-0 and is more commonly known as Montmorillonite K 10 or K30. See the link below to review these product options:
      https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/US/en/search/1318-93-0?focus=products&page=1&perpage=30&sort=relevance&term=1318-93-0&type=product
The CAS number for sodium bentonite is 85049-30-5. This material is currently not available for purchase.

      Helpful?

  4. What is the particle size for the product 285234?

    1 answer
    1. The particle size is not tested for every lot of this product. However, data from one particular lot showed that 100% of the particles were smaller than 74 micrometers, and 99.75% were smaller than 44 micrometers, with a mean particle size of 5.45 micrometers.

      Helpful?

  5. what is the average particle size?

    1 answer
    1. The particle size of this product is not tested on a lot-to-lot basis. However, historical data indicates a size of <74 um with the majority being <44 um.
