General description

Activated charcoal adsorbs hydrocarbons and other contaminants from carrier gases, air, and hydrogen. Operates efficiently for approximately six months when total hydrocarbons in the incoming gas average 10 ppm.

Dimensions:
  • 120 cc Trap: 111/8in. (28.2 cm) long x 13/8 in. (35 mm) diameter
  • 750 cc Trap: 161/2 in. (41.9 cm) long x 25/16in. (59 mm) diameter
  • S-Trap: 71/2 in. (19 cm) long x 59/16 in. (14.1 cm) wide x 1/2 in. (13 mm) diameter [total bed length = 193/4 in. (50.2 cm); the extended bed length ensures prolonged contact between the gas and the adsorbent and provides greater working capacity]
Hydrocarbon traps are basically suitable in GC for carrier gas purification, as the name suggests they are primarily used for trapping hydrocarbons. Some hydrocarbon traps, like the Supelpure HC Hydrocarbon Trap, contain a carbon molecular sieve that also restricts the elution of moisture and oxygen. Surges of moisture and oxygen that enter the gas line during the installation of a new gas cylinder enter the Supelpure HC Hydrocarbon Trap and are released slowly, diluted by the clean carrier gas from the new cylinder. It particularly removes C3 and other higher hydrocarbons.

  2. How do I refill the Supelpure HC Hydrocarbon Trap, Product No. 22446?

    1 answer
    1. Refilling: 1.Using two wrenches, remove the hex nuts from the fittings at each end of the trap. 2.Locate the end of the trap that has the two-piece fitting, and remove the 1/8 in NPT fitting. 3. Empty the contents of the trap into a convenient container. If possibly toxic organics are trapped on this material, ensure that appropriate disposal procedures are followed. 4. Clean any remaining Teflon sealing material from both internal and external threads of thefitting. The Supelco "Hook Septa Puller" Cat# 20352, is useful for this step. 5. Using Teflon sealing tape, wind a minimum of 3 to 5 full turns of tape around the male endof the NPT fitting while applying light tension to the tape. Always wrap in a clockwise direction when applying the sealing tape. Ensure that the tape does not obstruct the stainless steel flit installed in the end of the fitting. Using a funnel, replace the exhausted material with freshcharcoal Cat#22451. 6. Retighten the fitting. 7. Reinstall the trap in its previous position.
