General description

Neutral red is a vital dye widely used as a cellular pH indicator and is selective for shifts in pH. It is highly lipophilic in nature. It favours membrane potential dependent fluorescence that attributes to changes in hydrophobicity.

Application

Neutral red has been used to stain mouse mammary glands.
Useful as an indicator for preparing neutral red paper, and as a biological stain.
