General description

Ceramides containing 2-hydroxy fatty acids (hFA) are mainly found in the epidermis. 24:1(2R-OH) Ceramide is a 2R hydroxylated nervonic acid-containing sphingolipid.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Hydroxy fatty acid (hFA)-sphingolipids play a vital role in cell signaling, cell differentiation and apoptosis. These lipids also aid in formation and function of myelin. hFA-ceramide is produced by NAD(P)H-dependent enzyme, fatty acid 2-hydroxylase (FA2H). hFA-ceramides help in epidermal permeability barrier function.

Sphingolipids containing 2-hydroxylated fatty acids are among the most abundant lipid components of the myelin sheath and therefore are thought to play an important role in formation and function of myelin. To prove this hypothesis, we generated mice lacking a

2-Hydroxy fatty acids (hFA) are important components of a subset of mammalian sphingolipids. The presence of hFA in sphingolipids is best described in the nervous system, epidermis, and kidney. However, the literature also indicates that various hFA-sphingolipids are present in

Sphingolipids are ubiquitous components of eukaryotic cells that regulate various cellular functions. In many cell types, a fraction of sphingolipids contain 2-hydroxy fatty acids, produced by fatty acid 2-hydroxylase (FA2H), as the N-acyl chain of ceramide [hydroxyl fatty acid (hFA)-sphingolipids].
