Description générale

Norfluoxetine is a primary blood metabolite of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) fluoxetine, an antidepressant, sold under the trade name Prozac®. This Snap-N-Spike® Reference Solution is applicable to use in urine drug testing, clinical toxicology, or forensic analysis by LC-MS/MS or GC/MS.

Application

  • Forensic Detection of Cocaine and Antidepressants: Norfluoxetine is utilized in the development of an innovative analytical method using magnetic nanoparticles for the forensic detection of cocaine, antidepressants, and their metabolites in postmortem blood samples. This method represents a significant advance in forensic toxicology, providing rapid, sensitive, and reliable results essential for criminal investigations and legal proceedings (de Souza Schwarz et al., 2024).

  • Ion Channel Research in Dermatology: Research involving Norfluoxetine investigates its effects on selected ion channels, highlighting its potential implications in skin physiology. This study explores the multifaceted roles of serotonin reuptake inhibitors like Norfluoxetine in dermatological applications, contributing to better understanding and treatment of skin-related disorders (Kim et al., 2023).

  • Therapeutic Drug Monitoring: Norfluoxetine is featured in the simultaneous determination of serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors using an advanced UPLC MS-MS method. This method is used in clinical settings for therapeutic drug monitoring, ensuring proper dosage and optimizing treatment outcomes for patients undergoing antidepressant therapy (Eloisa Chávez-Castillo et al., 2022).

  • Pharmacological Research on TREK and TRESK Channels: Studies involving Norfluoxetine examine its interaction with TREK and TRESK K2P channels, important for understanding the pharmacological properties of drugs affecting the central nervous system. Such research aids in the development of new therapeutic agents for neurological conditions (Walsh et al., 2021).

  • Placental Aromatase Influence by SSRIs: Norfluoxetine is investigated for its impact on placental aromatase, a crucial enzyme in steroid hormone biosynthesis. Understanding how SSRIs affect this enzyme can improve safety profiles and therapeutic strategies during pregnancy, especially concerning fetal development (Hudon Thibeault et al., 2019).
