General description

Guanadine thiocyanate (GTC) is a chaotropic agent and strong denaturant that is used in research for protein degredation in vitro. This is useful for DNA or RNA isolation and purification. GTC is a key reagent for inactivation of endogenous DNases and RNase for molecular biology techniques used to isolate nucliec acids from tissues, cells, or viral genomes.

Application

Guanidine thiocyanate is commonly used for research:

  • to denature proteins in cell lysis buffer
  • to isolate and purify RNA from cells and tissues
  • to extract DNA from cellular and viral genomes
Chaotropic agent and strong denaturant; solubilizes cells.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Guanadine thiocyanate is strong protein denaturant commonly combinded with phenol to lyse tissues, cells, and proteins during RNA isolation assay.
