General description

Middlebrook OADC Growth Supplement is used with the Middlebrook Agar, that allows the isolation and cultivation of a wide variety of Mycobacteria. Middlebrook OADC Growth Supplement contains oleic acid, bovine albumin, sodium chloride, dextrose, and catalase. Oleic acid and other long chain fatty acids are essential for the metabolism of Mycobacteria. Some free fatty acids are toxic to Mycobacteria, but albumin binds to those fatty acids and prevents toxic action on Mycobacteria. Dextrose is the fermentable carbohydrate and an energy source whereas catalase destroys toxic peroxides that may be present in the medium.

Application

Middlebrook OADC growth supplement has been used as a supplement in 7H9 liquid medium to culture mycobacteria from clinical samples, environmental, food and beverages.

Host-directed therapies are gaining considerable impetus because of the emergence of drug-resistant strains of pathogens due to antibiotic therapy. Therefore, there is an urgent need to exploit alternative and novel strategies directed at host molecules to successfully restrict infections. The
