MitoTEMPO ist ein mitochondrial ausgerichtetes Antioxidationsmittel und ein spezifischer Fänger von mitochondrialem Superoxid. MitoTEMPO ist eine Kombination aus dem Antioxidationsmittel Piperidinnitroxid TEMPO und dem lipophilen Kation Triphenylphosphonium, das MitoTEMPO die Fähigkeit verleiht, Lipiddoppelschichten problemlos zu passieren und sich in den Mitochondrien um das Hundertfache anzureichern. Mitochondriale Dysfunktion und oxidativer Stress tragen zu einer Vielzahl von Störungen bei, zum Beispiel Herz-Kreislauf-, Nieren- und Lebererkrankungen sowie Parkinson und Alzheimer.
