This material is quite soluble in water. The rate of solubility in water has not been established. However, other sources report rates up to 560 mg/mL. Solutions prepared in water are stable when refrigerated at 2-8 °C for at least 60 days. Avoid storing solutions prepared in isotonic buffers, as the literature indicates a possible increase in the rate of decomposition.

As per the International Standard Preparation (1968), for comparative purposes, each microgram (ug) of colistin base is equivalent to 30 units. As an example, a lot reporting an activity of 22,891 units/mg would have the equivalent of 763 ug of colistin base per mg solid. This product has a minimum activity specification of 19,000 IU/mg, which equates to 633 ug colistin base per mg solid.
