Application
Polymyxin B sulfate is a strongly cationic cyclic polypeptide antibiotic that is derived from fermentation of Bacilus polymyxa. It is a mixture of B1 and B2 sulfate. The product has been used clinically to treat infections of the urinary tract, meninges and blood stream caused by susceptible strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It also has uses studying multidrug-resistant pathogens, as an immobilized agent for removal of endotoxins, and to induce pore formation in the membranes of cortex cells from excised sorghum roots.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Wirkungsweise: Polymyxin-B-Sulfat bindet an den Lipid-A-Teil der bakteriellen Lipopolysaccharide† und unterbricht die Zytoplasmamembran durch Bildung von Poren, die groß genug sind, um einen Nukleotidaustritt durch die Bakterienwände zu ermöglichen. Dadurch wird die Durchlässigkeit der Zytoplasmamembran gestört.
Antimikrobielles Spektrum: Hat eine bakterizide Wirkung auf die meisten gramnegativen Stäbchen††, einschließlich E. coli, sowie auf die meisten Pilze und grampositiven Bakterien.

The primary difference between the products is the testing. Product P0972 is USP tested, product P4932 is tested against 3 mammalian cell lines to make sure it is not toxic to the cells, product P4119 is cell culture and endotoxin tested, and products P1004 and 81334 are the research grades with P1004 in USP units and 81334 in international units.
