Questions

1–10 of 12 Questions
  1. Is there any composition data on the polysaccharide content of Avicel PH-101?

    1 answer
    1. No data is available characterizing the product's polysaccharide content.

      Helpful?

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.
For more information, please refer to the Product Dating Information document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/418/501/product-dating-information-06-25-mk.pdf

  3. What is the purity of this product?

    1 answer
    1. The purity of this material has not been determined.

  4. I would like to use Avicel in cell culture media. What is the best sterilization method? Can I autoclave the media with Avicel together with other components? Is there any concern about denaturation?

    1 answer
    1. Microcrystalline cellulose materials are generally considered to be stable and can withstand autoclaving, making them suitable for sterilization processes. However, it's important to consult specific product data sheets or manufacturer guidelines to confirm sterilization compatibility for your particular application, as formulations may vary. It is likely that standard autoclave settings, such as 121C for 15-30 minutes, would be effective.

  5. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  6. What is the nominal surface charge density or number of charged groups in Avicel® PH-101?

    1 answer
    1. Avicel® PH-101, being microcrystalline cellulose, is generally considered to be neutral and does not have a significant charge at physiological pH levels (around 7.4). However, its surface can interact with ions depending on the pH of the environment. At very low pH (acidic conditions), the hydroxyl groups on the cellulose can become protonated, which might lead to a slight positive charge. Conversely, at very high pH (alkaline conditions), the cellulose may interact with hydroxide ions, but it still remains largely neutral.

  7. What is the crystalline structure of Avicel? Is it Cellulose I or II?

    1 answer
    1. Avicel is a microcrystalline cellulose. The type of cellulose (I or II) is not designated. Please see the link below to review additional information regarding microcrystalline cellulose:
      https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/medicine-and-dentistry/microcrystalline-cellulose

  8. Is there a difference between Avicel PH-101 11363 and 11365 other than grams in the package? is one derived from the other? Is the particle size the same, and does it include the sodium carboxymethyl cellulose stabilizer?

    1 answer
    1. Product 11363 is tested according to pharmacopeia(Ph.) and European pharmacopoeia (Eur.) while product 11365 is a basic research grade item. Product 11363 is not tested for particle size. Neither product 11363 or product 11365 contain sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as a stabilizer. The major differences lie within the testing specifications. Please see the sample Certification of Analysis for more information:
