Structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) proteins maintain the sister chromatid cohesion during the process of cell division. SMC1A is present in the kinetochore, interacts with BRCA1 and ATM proteins indicating a role in DNA repair. It is reportedly involved in the G2/M transition of human glioma cells and G1/S transition of human lung adenocarcinoma cells.[1]
